Galaxy mergers can rapidly shut down star formation

چکیده
ABSTRACT Galaxy mergers trigger both star formation and accretion on to the central supermassive black hole. As a result of subsequent energetic feedback processes, it has long been proposed that may be promptly extinguished in galaxy merger remnants. However, this prediction widespread, rapid quenching late stage recently called into question with modern simulations never tested observationally. Here we perform first empirical assessment long-predicted end phase sequence. Based sample ∼500 post-mergers identified from Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS), show frequency post-merger galaxies have rapidly shutdown their following previous starburst is 30–60 times higher than expected control non-merging galaxies. No such excess found close pairs, demonstrating can indeed lead halt formation, but process only manifests after coalescence.

Star formation and structure formation in galaxy interactions and mergers
A number of theoretical and simulation results on star and structure formation in galaxy interactions and mergers is reviewed, and recent hydrodynamic simulations are presented. The role of gravity torques and ISM turbulence in galaxy interactions, in addition to the tidal field, is highlighted. Interactions can drive gas inflows towards the central kpc and trigger a central starburst, the inte...
متن کاملFormation of globular clusters in galaxy mergers
Our numerical simulations first demonstrate that the pressure of ISM in a major merger becomes so high (> 105 kB K cm−3) that GMCs in the merger can collapse to form globular clusters (GCs) within a few Myr. The star formation efficiency within a GMC in galaxy mergers can rise up from a few percent to ∼ 80 percent, depending on the shapes and the temperature of the GMC. This implosive GC format...
متن کاملFormation of Globular Clusters in Galaxy Mergers
We present a high-resolution simulation of globular cluster formation in a galaxy merger. For the first time in such a simulation, individual star clusters are directly identified and followed on their orbits. We quantitatively compare star formation in the merger to that in the unperturbed galaxies. The merging galaxies show a strong starburst, in sharp contrast to their isolated progenitors. ...
متن کاملStar Formation in Cluster-Cluster Mergers
Radio continuum emission at 1.4 GHz was used to identify active galaxies in a sample of 20 nearby Abell clusters. The radio emission indicates either an active galactic nucleus or current star formation, and optical spectroscopy was used to evaluate which of these dominates for each of the radio-selected galaxies. In an analysis which parallels the blue fractions of Butcher-Oemler studies, we c...
متن کاملStar Formation in Galaxy Mergers with Realistic Models of Stellar Feedback and the Interstellar Medium
We use hydrodynamic simulations with detailed, explicit models for stellar feedback to study galaxy mergers. These high-resolution (∼1 pc) simulations follow the formation and destruction of individual giant molecular clouds (GMC) and star clusters. We find that the final starburst is dominated by in situ star formation, fuelled by gas which flows inwards due to global torques. The resulting hi...
